Frugal Family Time – Picking Blueberries

Posted by idawrites on July 26, 2008 in Family, Food, Frugal |

July is a fabulous time of year, here in Georgia. There doesn’t seem to be an end to the things you can do with your family that are inexpensive and fun.

Today, we’re going to pick blueberries. There are a lot of Pick Your Own farms outside the city. I found the one we’re going to by searching on PickYourOwn.org. They have a pretty extensive list of farms for picking your own fruits and vegetables. They also have listings for farmers markets, for those who aren’t as adventurous as we are.

Why are we picking our own blueberries? Well, I have been dying for some for a month. But, the grocery stores are selling them for $3.99 a half pint. The Pick Your Own farm we’re going to lets you pick them for $6.00 a GALLON! I’m all for saving $122.00 per gallon on blueberries by spending a fun day with my family.

I already have big plans for our berries. I’m going to individually freeze most of them for adding to oatmeal and recipes all year. I’m going to make up some waffle batter and freeze in batches large enough to thaw and make on a weekend morning. I also plan to bake blueberry muffins for the teachers Welcome Back breakfast that the PTA is sponsoring. Maybe I’ll even make some batches of pie filling to put up for the holidays.

The children are excited that we’ll have this time together. I’m excited that I’ll be able to have fun with blueberries in my recipes for an entire year, and not spend an arm and a leg on them. Maybe I’ll even save some of the seeds to plant my own bush next year.

What are some of your favorite frugal family time ideas?
